It is once again time for the American Cancer Society’s annual Relay for Life fund raiser. RLUMC has participated in the Relay for Life for the past 4 years. We did so in memory/honor of our family members, friends and church members who have been touched by cancer.
Although last year’s event was virtual, our team was still able to raise more than $1,700 for the ACS. That brought our 4-year total to nearly $13,000. These funds were desperately needed by the ACS to fund their many programs assisting those undergoing cancer treatment and their families. This is even more true this year as the ACS’s fund raising and budgetary support has been devastated by COVID. This year’s event will be held at the Watervliet High School on Saturday, July 31 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Note that this year's event is only scheduled for 4 hours. If you become a team member you do not have to be present at the Relay or remain for the entire time, but are encouraged to do so if possible. The term "Relay" is a misnomer - while some team members walk around the track, you are not required to do so. The event coordinator has posted the preliminary schedule for this year's event as follows: Opening CeremonyTime to get started. We kick off the event by honoring everyone who's been affected by cancer and everyone who has contributed to the success of this year's Relay season. Survivor/Caregiver Walk Survivors and Caregivers are the heart and soul of Relay For Life events. We honor their strength and courage with every step they take. It doesn't matter if you were diagnosed 10 days ago or 10 years ago, you can walk while everyone gathers together to cheer you on. Luminaria Ceremony During this ceremony we represent everyone touched by cancer with a Luminaria. Each light represents a life—a life taken by cancer, a survivor of cancer, or a support for a person still fighting the disease. It's a powerful demonstration that gives people the opportunity to grieve but also offers comfort and hope. Closing Ceremony Our closing ceremony is the time to commit to take action and help lead the fight for a world free from cancer. It's a time to celebrate what we've accomplished together and a time to unify for the work that needs to be done moving forward If you would like to become a RLUMC team member you can do so on line by going to https://secure.acsevents.org/site/STR?fr_id=100033&pg=team&team_id=2577576 or by calling 800 227-2345 where a representative will be happy to sign you up for the team - Round Lake United Methodist Church. Once you join you will receive your own web page where your friends and family can make donations to support your efforts. Of course you can also accept cash or check donations. If you want to support the team but don’t want to become a member, you can make a donation on line to either the team or to a particular team member by going to https://secure.acsevents.org/site/STR?fr_id=100033&pg=team&team_id=2577576 or by calling 800 227-2345. You can also use this site to purchase a luminary in memory of a loved one who has lost the battle with cancer or in honor of someone who is or has been touched by cancer. You can also donate by any of the team members (currently Jean Halme, Barb Gregorek, Carl Millington, Marilyn DeLorio, and myself).
